Getting your period back after having a baby

November 25, 2020 By Amy DarcyLeave a Comment

getting your period back after baby - the hormonal changesA few months ago I got my period back after having Aria (baby #2). I can’t say I had missed it! I was lucky that Aria was 14 months before this happened. It was my second period in around 5 years (winning run!) because I fell pregnant with Finn, but only had one period after he was born before I fell pregnant with Aria.  Just like pregnancy, everyone’s period return is different but I thought I would give a run down of the general timeframes, accompanying hormonal changes and what you can do to manage these changes.

Strategies to stop Emotional Eating

August 20, 2020 By Amy DarcyLeave a Comment

Have you ever entered ‘unsupervised child at a party’ mode when you’ve been sad, annoyed or stressed? What I mean by that is, have you ever over eaten as a way to deal with your feelings? Is emotional eating something you still tend to do? Portrait of a little surprised girl with curly hair, and two mouth-watering donuts in her hands, closes her eyes with donuts, on a pink background Emotional eating is something that I’ve struggled (and sometime still struggle!) with, and I know most of us, at one time or another have reached for the Tim Tams to chocolate coat those unhappy feelings. Let’s be honest, it works a treat – who doesn’t love a bit of comfort food! But it isn’t really a sustainable way to manage yourself and doesn’t comfort for long.

Moroccan roasted cauliflower with grilled fish

Moroccan roasted cauliflower with grilled fish

Spices! They can transform a simple bland dish into an aroma and flavour filled meal that you’ll be wanting to add to your regular repertoire. This Moroccan roasted cauliflower with grilled fish dish by Bridget Davis is one that is on repeat at our house. It’s quick and easy and utilises some of the best favourite combinations. You can do this dish with either Ras el hanout (mix of cinnamon, coriander seeds, black pepper, ground ginger), or a Moroccan spice blend (cumin, Himalayan salt, pepper, cinnamon, all spice, coriander, chilli, cloves, nutmeg and turmeric), which lend such a wonderfully uplifting hand to the cauliflower. Don’t be overwhelmed by the spice blends, you can buy these premixed at the supermarket if you prefer. If you enjoy making from scratch or have the ingredients to make from scratch, Bridget has some excellent spice blend recipes in her book too.

Amy in orange tights and black workout top doing walking lunge exercise

Time poor? Working too much? Holidays? Kids? No excuses! Prioritise or it is not going to happen. You don’t need a big chunk of time. If you only have short amounts of time – make the most of it! I’ve made a ten minute body weight workout that you can definitely squeeze into your day at least once (but preferably three times to hit the recommended 30 minutes of exercise per day). This workout is equipment free, and doesn’t take up much space at all so you can do it anywhere.

My gut health healing story!

July 13, 2020 By Amy DarcyLeave a Comment

red white stripe shirt coffee while pants on bench

I’ve struggled with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for over 8 years now with symptoms ebbing and flowing throughout that time. Passing foul smelling gas, pregnant looking painful bloating and alternating between diahorrea and constipation have all been ‘normal’ for me. In an ongoing effort to heal my gut health, I’ve worked with GP’s, dietitians, gastroenterologists and most recently, nutritionist Jessica Cox from The JCN Clinic. I understand most people don’t talk about these embarrassing conditions but the reality is that many people struggle with IBS, (1 in 4 actually). So, I just want to share what I have learnt and tried to help other’s who might also be battling an unhappy gut….

Kale, Sweet Potato and Feta Muffins (kid friendly!)

June 29, 2020 By Amy DarcyLeave a Comment

I.Love.Snacks.

And it turns out it’s not just me – Tiffy Hall loves them too. So much so that she wrote an entire cook book dedicated to snacks! And not just any snacks, these ones are filling and jam packed with ingredients that are good for you!

Kale, Sweet Potato and Feta Muffins. Any recipe with kale in the title gives it health points! I make these muffins at the start of my week and use them throughout the week. I have them for a quick grab and go snack, or as a nutritious breakfast option if I’m running short on time. They work for Finn and Aria too! If there are any left over on the third day after baking (which is unlikely) I just pop them in a sandwich bag in the freezer to use later. They are brilliant!

Spiced Tofu Salad with Beetroot Hummus

Tofu is so versatile, I can’t believe I am just discovering it!! It’s made from dried soybeans that have been ground, filtered and boiled. Standing alone, it is like tasteless rubber. But add some spices and crisp up the outside in the frying pan and you’ve got yourself a flavoursome lunch! I used ‘sumac’ spice and…

What to Look for when Choosing an Eco-friendly Sanitary Product

The love for eco-friendly and chemical free food, makeup and skin care products is becoming widespread in Australia.  One area I feel is overlooked (probably as a result of less marketing) is eco-friendly sanitary products.
